What is the group composition for an expedition?

On average, groups consist of several couples,a couple of friends, and a number of individuals travelling on their own. The ratio of male to female is usually about 50:50 although it can vary slightly from trip to trip.

The overall group size may vary from 8 to no more than 16 individuals.

Is it safe?

Safety is a number one priority and is an integral part of all activities. Although a certain amount of risk is inherent in all adventures, our record of safety is unparalleled in the field of outdoor pursuits.

Team leader Dave Thom has been paddling in Pembrokeshire since 1970 and knows every knook and cranny, tide race, and everything that moves around this wonderful coastline.

How do I prepare myself?

Pre-trip instruction is not necessary, at the start of the expedition we will ensure that you receive adequate instruction and familiarisation in the use of the equipment, and will provide on-going support to help you get the best out of your experience as we go along.

It is usually unecessary to engage in any special physical training before the expedition (those with special medical conditions should contact our office prior to the trip so we can plan your itinerary with any special needs in mind). Trips focus upon gentle coastal cruising, exploration and wildlife spotting, so long days paddling would be unusual - on average there are 4 - 6 hours paddling each day, depending upon the weather and the activities along the way.

It is useful to familiarise yourself with the area to be visited by reading and reviewing the pre-trip information pack as well as the recommended reading list.

What else will we be doing apart from paddling?

Additional activities may depend upon the interests of the particular group and its members. There will be the opportunity (but not obligation) to engage in a number of outdoor activities such as rock climbing, abseiling, coasteering, coastal walks and talks, survival training, and team building games and exercises.

There is always a special time for rest, reflection, and maybe journal writing, and in the evenings you are free to explore the local beaches and countryside walks, or the local pubs if you prefer!

The first day of your expedition is devoted to safety and equipment familiarisation and getting to know each other, very informal fun!
